CHICAGO - Just what made that little old terrier think she could lug an 8-pound ball around a bowling alley? Anyone knows a dog can't bowl. Well, maybe not, but one night three years ago Zoe sank her canines into the holes of a pink bowling ball at King-Pin Lanes and took off at an awkward trot.

The 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled dog Race is living up to its reputation as a tough, bruising race. It ended early for four-time champion Doug Swingley, the Lincoln, Mont., musher who withdrew Monday after being injured in a spill on a slick and icy hill a few miles before the Rainy Pass checkpoint, just two days into the race from Anchorage to Nome.

The frigid Alaskan backcountry will echo with the yips and yowls of sled dogs for the next two weeks as 82 mushers race their teams across 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometers) of desolate tundra, jagged mountains and wind-swept sea ice.

Dog Rescued After Falling Off Cliff (KGO-TV Bay Area)
Firefighters from the North County Fire Authority rescued a dog Saturday after it fell down a 350-foot cliff along Mori Point in Pacifica, the fire authority reported today.

Home for the least loved (USA Today)
The Rolling dog Sanctuary in Ovando, Mont., is home to 80 dogs, cats and horses, most of them disabled blind, deaf, three-legged, neurologically damaged often through abuse or neglect. The ranch is a non-profit founded by a couple six years ago.
