Shirk suffers from a rare neuromuscular disease similar to muscular dystrophy, but she ran into roadblocks when she tried to get a dog. So in 1998, she started 4 Paws for Ability, a nonprofit agency that trains dogs to work with people whom other agencies have turned away.

A veterinarian and the town's animal control officer are trying to raise money to pay for surgery for a dog that was beaten and abandoned. The dog, a young gray pit bull, was found abandoned last week in the City Hill Street area. It had a football-sized tumor on its side, said Marilyn Weid, Naugatuck's assistant animal control officer.
